The failure mechanism there would be high amplitude interference spikes coming back down the line when the spark plug fires. The resistance wires have about 5k ohms or so which does a good job of attenuating the feed back. Sometimes a little inductor can be used with solid wires. The inductor resists the high frequencies of the spark but offer low resistance to the dc current once the plug is fired and for the duration of the dwell and can make the difference on plugs that need a lot of energy to fire properly.
