I was a Demolitions Sgt on a Special Forces A-Team, so I"ve blown up a few things...usually with C4 or home made explosives. Dynamite gets very unstable over time- it separates. On a training mission I discovered a box that was leaking, and lacking C4 to blow it, I ended up (very carefully) carrying it to a nearby creek and crumbling it by hand in the water.
Years ago you could buy dynamite in hardware stores...not anymore. Dynamite has less power than C4, but still very effective. Just takes more pounds to get the same bang for the buck. You could dig under the rock and set the charge, but if you"re doing a surface charge you can get much better results by capping the charge with a bit of mud. Even a small bit helps to direct the force into the rock, rather than let it go to the air.
