They are handing you a line alright! I have a 25 year old Kohler 321 in my Power King. I have replaced three rods in this block in the last 15 years. I always use 10W30 oil. When I have lost rods it was because of three different circumstances. The first rod went out because my son didn't check the oil and add some when it was needed. When I replaced that rod I decided that I could guess at the right torque on the rod bolts. They were supposed to be set at 200 inch pounds. I torqued em down too tight and it ran about an hour and a half before I spun the bearing. I replaced that rod and followed the instructions using 200 inch lbs torque and ran it for 5 more years using 10W30 Quaker State. Then this winter I was plowing snow up hill while running the engine at high speed in 3rd gear. Because it was slightly low on oil and the fact I was loading the engine very heavily while going up hill the rod bearing siezed and busted. It was my fault not the oils. The shop you went to did something wrong and just want you to take the blame. Don't stand for it.
