: : Paul, : : One of the best additives on the market is Stanadyne's Performance Formula Jr. available thru your local fuel injection shop. Reccomend replacing injector nozzles with new ones if there is a lot of age on the injectors. Injectors wear just like anything else on a diesel and no amount of additive will correct it. New nozzles improves cranking, smoking, fuel consumption, power, and increases engine life. Poor nozzles waste fuel and that smoke you see is unburned fuel. This same unburned fuel is washing your cylinder liners down and causing premature wear. : : Keep it running strong, : : Diesel Dan (the pump man) : : : Paul, : I say AMEN to Dan's recommendations about replacing injector tips. Have a qualified shop do the job for you. In the process the opening pressure must be reset to specs. Old injectors develope excess differences in the opening pressure due to wear and stress on the injector tip, spring, and neighborhood parts. : It may be good to have the opening pressure checked and reset to specs. even if you can't afford to replace tips. The higher opening pressure helps mystify the fuel better. : I personally would try to advance the timing a couple of degrees on an engine with many hours. Wear on the injection pump, injectors, etc. will delay the actual point of fuel injection. I always try to set injection pump timing to the more advanced position in the specified specs. ( Example: 18 deg. BTDC + or - 1 deg.. Go for the 19 deg.) : Tractos running on a dyno which get a bit delayed in timing will run hotter with less power. Some old tractors may develope a miss, which an advancement in timing will take away. : The opening pressure check should be regular on maintenance for the best performance. Check on mechanics familiar with your engine for a good idea on how often to make the check. : I believe the diesel without as much lubrication qualities is a big burden for diesels with the environmental update on fuel specs. : : Milan What i found that works if you only need to clean the injectors and is cheap is DEXTRON II OR III i have used it on cars, tractors, trucks and it works on them all Dean
