: I tend to agree with all of these guys who posted responses to your question but I will tell you what goes on at a major Chevrolet dealership here on the gulf coast of Louisiana. When I take my $25000 1996 Chev Z-71 in for an oil change, I get straight 30 weight whether I want it or not. When I brought the fact that the manual called for 5w-30 or 10w-30 to the attention of the service manager, he stated that they had too many bad experiences with multi-grade oils and now only used straight 30 weight in all vehicles including brand new $40000 suburbans. I did not like this idea so I checked with another Chev. dealer about 20 miles away. Same thing. The only thing they had was straight 30 weight. I really thought this line of thinking has disappeared years ago but I guess not. Well after 21000 miles, my Chev. has only had straight 30 weight in it. No problems yet but for 10 months out of the year it never gets below 50 degrees. I can't help but think that on those very cold 30 degree days that 30 weight is causing damage to my engine. Well just food for thought. Good luck! Maybe we need to pose this question to Penzoil and other manufactures
