I don't think we need a permit in my county. If we do it hasn't been enforced. The comm center does want us to call them if we do light a fire so they know what is going on when some motorist sees the smoke and panics and gets out the cell phone.
Last summer I had bucked up a pile of corn stalks that had washed to the edges of a field pond made by heavy rain. After the water went away I raked the stalks up into a windrow, bucked them up with the loader and set them afire. It was right by a lonely gravel road. I watched the fire for awhile and then went home for a few minutes. When I headed back up to the fire I saw a fire truck there with the firemen pouring water on it. Some cell phone caller had seen it and called it in. Later I found out who the caller was and she thought a round bale had been set on fire by vandals. A cornstalk bale in the middle,of a bean field? Yeah! Anyway, I knew the firemen well and they knew me and they could tell I wasn't in a good mood about this situation. They told me they knew what was going on as soon as they arrived, but if they respond to a fire, they have to put it out. Next time I light a fire like that I'm going to grab a couple of beers and sit back and watch it till it's out.
