QUESTION:
"Can you charge a 8 volt battery with a 6 volt charger"
ANSWER:
It DEPENDS on the charger and condition of battery: (some may just fine while others maybe not so well)
As long as the charger will produce at least around 9 volts or more when coupled to the battery (battery is actually 8.4 if charged) YES it can charge a so called 8 volt battery and that depends on the charger design and circuit and control scheme which I (nor anyone) cant say from here absent all its specs and design.
THAT ALL BEING SAID: There's a better chance of charging and at a faster rate IF YOU USE THE CHARGERS 12 VOLT SETTING. When I use a 12 volt charger to charge an 8 volt battery I set it on one of the lower (if adjustable) charge rates. AND DONT SET IT AND FORGET IT BUT KEEP AN EYE ON THE ELECTROLYTE LEVEL AND DONT LET IT BOIL OVER.
Not having the chargers design and specs one way to find out is TRY IT AT 6 AND 12 VOLT SETTINGS AND OBSERVE THE VOLTAGE, CURRENT, AND HOW MUCH SHE IS BUBBLING AND OUTGASSING. Chances are YES it will charge but faster and with more current if on 12 volts but don't use a high rate and keep an eye on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today's Featured Article - Restoration Story: Fordson Major - by Anthony West. George bought his Fordson Major from a an implement sale about 18 years ago for £200.00 (UK). There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard. From the engine number, it was found that this Major was produced late 1946. It was almost complete but had various parts that would definitely need replacing.
