With sick animals, I would much rather pen them separate and then feed them the prescribed medication through feed rather than running them through the chute. Besides needing extra hands to do it, it is more stress for the animal. When weaning calves or pigglets I have put in a medicated protein tub or meds in a feed batch for animals that are weaned at a tough time or are part of a herd that is fighting a bug. Other than adding 10 pounds to a batch of feed (lasting the first week for weening hogs) I have probably used only one bag of medicated crumbles in the last five years. With twice a year vaccinations I don't usually have to worry about it.
However...
I know my herds. If there is something wrong I need to take care of it then. If I can throw crumbles on some corn and get them started on the mend I (and they) are better off than waiting until the morning to call the vet. We all know that this time of the year many chores get done at night because you have spent the day in the field. It would be nice if a vet was available, but I know they have a life, too. I will probably buy a couple of bags just to ease my mind.
I don't do more than a couple hundred meat birds a year, but the first week I like them medicated. That's the one that concerns me.
