I never have planted much hay, so I can't help you much there, but 5#s rye seed /acre?? That will be so thin you will have to look for a plant. I seed cover crop rye at 50#s/acre and it's not that thick of a stand. Around here everyone uses oats for a cover crop when planting alfalfa. Rye has a tendency to be a natural weed suppressor, will it stunt or slow the alfalfa & timothy? Perhaps I'm confused. Chris
