There are some unanswered questions here. What was/is the friend doing, farming?, some other business?, just trying to keep the property intact?. Did he build a house to live in?, on the home place? was there a verbal agreement? Was Dad supposed to take care of the details (put in his will, transfer the property, etc) and didn't. What matters is that whatever Dad was supposed to do he didn't and the friend has to be able to prove it. Did any of the siblings have any knowledge? If there is no proof then the poor friend may out of luck for all of it. I find it hard to believe that the rest of the siblings know nothing--there way more to this tale then you have told us.
