: : I have a Cub Cadet with 17 hp Kohler 2 cyl. As I shut it off I noticed it was loading up with fuel pretty bad. About 1/2 hour later when I tried to start it, it wouldn't turn over. Not a mechanical lock, but a hydraulic lock. I pulled the plugs and when I hit the starter to see how it would act, it shot a stream of gas out each cylinder. I assume that the float in the carb is hung up or has a hole in it, and the gas is gravity feeding into the engine. I'm going to look into it tomorrow. Has anyone had a similar experience with the Kohler twin? I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, Mark R. Todd and Steamer, Thanks for your help. I rebuilt the carb today and found trash (may have been rust) in the float bowl. I also replaced all the gas hose from the tank and the filter too. There was about 2 qts of gas with the oil in the crankcase. I blew thru the engine oil filler with an air hose to get the gas fumes out of the engine before I restarted it. I was a little concerned after seeing all that gas. The engine runs fine now. I did think about the diaphragm in the fuel puimp being the culprit, but for now it seems OK. I appreciate your help. Mark : I used to work for a dealer and have seen this many times, especially on lawn tractors with vertical : crankshaft (1415,1420,1715,1720 models) The earliest of these models did not have an inline fuel filter and the top of the tank was higher : than the carb and when the tank was full the gravity pressure from the tank would force the needle off its seat. I recomend replacing the : small kohler inline filter with a regular automotive universal inline filter.Another problem i have seen is on models : with a fuel pump. The fuel pump has a steel plate on the diaphagm that can rust. Usually : the fuel pump is down stream from the filter so the rust goes from the pump to the carb : causing the needle valve to stick. You should tear the carb off and clean it before going : any further
