I specifically said that I understood and expected discussions about SS adjustments regarding rates, benefits. This is in line with what you call "reform". I'm OK with that. Just as insurance rates go up if the costs of claims aren't covered by the pool of revenue. SS is kind of like insurance in that regard right now.
Look at the way pensions as "defined benefit" plans are bankrupting private/public entities with a subsequent move toward "defined contribution" plans (401s). I think SS will move in that direction someday in the name of reform.
We all are putting 12.4% of our earnings (50/50 employer/employee) into SS. I can't even fathom how the calculations work to define what my benefit will be when I retire in 2 years. But it's there on the annual statement and online account and I'm using those figures. Now, if things change, I'll just adjust my lifestyle, I guess.
