The V8 has decent power, not so much with the V6 but if you were just putting around you wouldn't notice much difference. V8's had valve cover gaskets that will leak both onto exhaust and into spark plug holes. Both engines had coil issues. A/C system was quirky with the dual zone not cooling/heating properly, also evap temp sensors act up shutting A/C comp off. The front suspension was a little weak, broken ball joints and noisy/worn components that are expensive parts and/or labor to replace. The transmissions have known issues with the shift solenoid pack and servo bores wearing in the case. Oh yea, the hydraulic cooling fan system can be a problematic too.
A manual trans was an option for the early V6 model, not V8. I consider the car was an entry level luxury car with some sportiness, it was really a plain and average car that I wouldn't consider luxurious or sporty though. The 2003-06 saw a fairly decent power improvement and ironed out a few of the known problems. Also keep in mind either engine prefers premium fuel.
