In the past I've held items with no deposit for guys that said they wanted to buy it, only to have them take weeks to show up with the money, or wanted to dicker on the price after I'd turned away other buyers. Now I sell to the first person with the right cash or a reasonable deposit to hold it for a fixed length of time.
If that makes someone mad, that's their choice to be mad. Some guys will get mad when someone bids against them at an auction.
