Yep been there. Hag and still have a JEEP Comanche (pickup based on the Cherokee) on which the left rear wheel and axle left at 60 mph. The manufacturer had built them with the oil seal INSIDE of the bearing and the bearings were supposed to be packed every 50k miles. That little fact was not in any manual so of course I assumed the bearing was lubricated by the gear oil in the pumpkin just like every other drive axle. It was one strange feeling to feel the rear drop and look left to see the end of the axle at eye level. Took my foot off the gas shoved it into neutral and hung onto the steering wheel waiting for it to try to ground loop, it didn't. I had always heard that when a wheel comes off it will go faster then the vehicle and it is true. That got even with the front of the truck and took a hop over the top of the truck with the axle pointing down and rolled into the weeds. After collecting my shorts I called for a tow and retrieved the wheel and axle.
