I have been doing small engine work for 20+ years and they are giving you Bull S.... I would guess with my experence that work was done improperly. I would guess they put the rod in BACKWARDS. The rod has a oil dipper on the rod cap and a hole to get oil to the crank. If the rod is put in backwards the rod will fail from no oil. The rod also could have been over torqued damaging the bearing surface. Water will work for lube on the rod if you could keep it from rusting the parts. (I will bet on this one).
