A's are the latest decendants and final versions of the old 20-35 and later E series wheatland/standard models. They have the big 400 to 500 cu. in. 4 cylinder engine of the E types married to the 1930's U type transmission and rear end gearing. This gives them "more modern speeds" and 4 gears instead of just 3 as the E models had. They still look almost identical to the E's until you notice the operator's platform is different as far as control locations and type of seat suspension. A's have a sort of "road gear" while the poor old E's were slower than sin because of their old growling semi-open pinion/bull gear type rear end final drive dating back to the original 1920's 18-30 and 29-35 tractors of which nearly all had steel wheels. These E and A models were the "Big Boys" of the Allis-Chalmers tractor line until after the WWII era.
