I have a 20 hp intec with 400 hrs. I had to adjust the valves once, no carb problems. Popping in the exhaust is common. Try leaving engine running at full speed before you turn it off. That seems to work better for me, eliminates dieseling and popping. When you turn key off, you kill the spark and unburned gas is inside the muffler. Popping isn't a sign you are running rich.
Check air filter, Check valve clearance Replace spark plugs Replace fuel filter I purchased a blown kohler engine off a cub cadet. There was only 300 hrs on engine. The cooling fins were 100% choked with dirt and grass. Engine overheating could be the cause of our problem.
