Just curious - what happens then?
Since most "sythetics" (Mobile 1 and Royal Purple included) (Group IV) are highly refined oils using polyalphaolefins as the base stock, and most higher quality Group IIIs have a small amount of Group IV added (along with their highly refined hydrocarbon base stock) the chance of a "bad" reaction between them and a conventional oil are about as probable as a bad reaction to adding a quart of Quakerstate to a crankcase full of Castrol.
Group III oils have a higher additive solubility while Group IVs are better for high and low temperature (oxidation resistance & pour point) characteristics. Basically changing your conventional oil more often gives you better "typical" protection against wear than the extended oil changes of Group IV synthetics. In that situation (changing your conventional oil at shorter durations) synthetics only give you an advantage at extreme cold start ups and in extreme heat situations.
Basically it goes back to what I've always said - clean oil of any quality is better than dirty oil of any quality.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
