When batteries are run in series the crankings amps will only be as strong as the weakest battery or the lower rated one. When they are run parallel then the cranking amps are added together.
Since you would be buying two batteries for a 12v system, it looks like the best benefit might be running 2-12v batts in parallel. Either way, good quality cables and connections will be your friend.
If one series battery failed, it will open the circuit or drop voltage in half or real low, if a parallel battery goes down, you will lose capacity but still have decent voltage and might get by. There is a reason almost nothing modern with multiple batteries run in series, for that matter anything else electrical either.
