Bill, I highly recommend a batteryminder 12248, works for me. I also recommend a Battery conductivity tester, Midtronics PBT300. Both you will have to buy online, Amazon or ebay. Then go to NAPA and get a good hydrometer with a thermometer.
There is no need for a trickle charger unless you have something draining the battery. If you don't have a drain and you think a trickle charger is the answer, you are mistaken. You have a battery with a dead cell. Which you can confirm with a good hydrometer. Desulfating will not do any good at this point.
I have over 20 lead acid batteries and my batteryminder is used 24/7/365 desulfating up to 4 batteries at a time. Desulfating only extends the life of a battery. Batteries have an inherent problem, sulfates form on the plates and they don't last forever.
A dying battery will show good with battery conductivity tester as soon as you charge it. Next day or two, it can't hold the charge. Usually has a dead cell or two. I use hydrometer to confirm dead cell.
