QUESTION are you sure the small wire from Alternator goes to the Distributor??? It doesn't go to the Coil input or IGN switch???
Sounds like the OLD one may be a 3 wire as the small "Voltage Sense" terminal wires to the big main rear output stud. HOWEVER the other small connector is the "Excitation" which would wire to the "COIL" or Ignition Switch, NOT the distributor.
If the new one only has the big ream main output stud???????????? its a ONE WIRE Alternator. If it is a One Wire Alternator you dont connect any small wires to the coil or distributor, just the one wire to the battery or ammeter and that's it NO small wires to coil or ignition etc. HOWEVER Ive seen some what are called and work as a one wire which still have the small black plastic connector wired up with one to output as voltage sense.
