Now I will only use 35 year shingles. If you cost average, shingles and metal, shingles is best for me. In 35 years, my insurance company will replace the shingles and I pay just the deductible. You may have have to shop around to find a company who wants to do that. Most want to depreciate your shingles and you get very little. You have to have good ventilation for shingles to work. In the past I used 25 year shingles and got all 25+ out of them. Many of my roofs, the hail took. I have 2 homes and 10 rentals, so I talking about many roofs, houses, garages, sheds, barns.
I'm not a fan of metal, wind will remove it and condensation is a major issue. A local jail only got about 30 years out their metal roof. Now they are looking at a major expense to remove it, repair the plywood under neath that is rotted out.
You only want 10 years, 20 year shingles will work. Bet you are going to want more than 10.
