In response to 55 50 Ron's question a couple of days ago. The apparatus shown in his picture is known as a hay slide. This was used in the days when hay was hauled to the barn loose and stored loose in the haymow. The loose hay could be unloaded from the wagon using large hay hooks which were part of a track and pulley system which hoisted the hay to the mow. The hay slide was mounted under the peak of the barn roof and could be moved from one end of the barn to the other. The hay could then be dropped onto the slide to be placed where it was wanted in the barn. The slide could be adjusted to slide the hay off of either side. This was to prevent having to fork all of the hay manually.
The attached pictures show the hay slide from the original post along with several pictures I took of a slide still hanging in my brother's barn.
