: I need the specs for drive axle bearing replacemen. Need to know how to check bearing preload and proper set up for obtaining gear lash. Mac, This is just from my mind. Your specs, depend on what bearings you're using. I'm assuming you're installing new bearings on the axle inside and out. First take the load off the opposite axle and loosen the bearing end cap bolts, while you set the bearings on it's partner side. An unmatched set of bearings (cone & cup of inner and outer bearings come in seperate packages), ususally has you rotate the axle while you torque three of the 3/8" outer cap bolts, evenly to 20 inch lbs., and then without rotating, torque the bolts to 50 inch lbs. Measure the gap near the bolts with a feeler guage and average the amount. This will be the shim pack. On a matched set of bearings the preload is much more! Rotate while torqueing to 50 inch lbs., and then without rotating torque the 3 bolts up to 250 inch lbs. Measure the gap and average it and this is the shim pack. It may seem that the matched set of bearings are under excessive torque, but the bearings will be getting a hard life normally. I personally think the tighter bearings transfers the shock more directly to the cast housing and as a result it is actually better for the bearings. Just be sure to change the Hytran as called for in the operator's book. The bull pinion shaft bearing preload is: rotate while torqeing 3 - 5/8" bolts to 50 inch lbs. Then without rotating, torque the bolts on up to 100 inch lbs. Then measure the gap with a feeler guage near the bolts and average it out. Take the average and add 0.010" to obtain the value for the shim pack. (This i s what my mind is telling me, but I'll try to double check all of these values tomorrow at work! I usually find the values easily come to mind as I get working on a familiar work order!) Send me an email and I'll try to scan the page of the service manual and send it as an attached file back to you. Milan H. Dilworth
