To be successful at no till you have to be on top of the management of all the steps. You really need to burn down weeds way before you plant. Any weed growth uses up some of the nutrients that the corn crop needs.
This year no till really looks tough around here. The cool wet spring is inhibiting root growth and it is showing. The worst looking fields are corn no tilled into soybean stubble. The conventional corn is 2-3 stages ahead of the no till corn this year. Then add in some spotty stands in the no till verses just about perfect stands in the conventional tillage fields. IN this growing season it looks like the no till fields will have a big yield drag. Next year it could be the opposite.
