I have a ford excursion with 6.0 diesel. It's possibly the largest consumer grade diesel vehicle, and it weighs 9200lbs. I see those no idling signs, 5 tons. That's 10k lbs, and there aren't any consumer vehicles that weigh that much. it's meant for your UPS and FedEx drivers I'd like to think.
I often leave my truck idling, it's easier on the two $150 batteries. The fuel consumption at idle is very low, less than a gallon an hour assuming you don't have your high idle on(to prevent a pesky EGR from getting clogged).
Also there's many times where a 5min trip into the hardware store turns into 30 minutes. Frequently stopping and starting the AC without a 15min break is hard on AC systems as well. Starting is the hardest thing a diesel ever does.
