I had a 4 cyl. 20R engine with a 4 sp. in a little Toyota back years ago, late '70's. Felt like driving a tin can (thin sheet metal) and bounced you to death. The 20R was overhead cam and you had to adjust the valves every couple of months with my driving it to work. What really got me was the mileage seldom got to 19 and I could have gotten a full sized 6 chebby with a mushy ride and got that or near it.
On pull, yes it would do that if you put 3-400# in the bed. I used to carry half a dozen bags of sacrete in the back to smooth things out somewhat.
Also had the Toyota Silica with the 20R, same story on gas, 1977 year-model, the one that mimicked the Ford GT Mustang fastback, black, alum wheels, 2 shades of blue and one silver pinstriping. One of the first cars to have sensors for all the vital functions. Bought it new and after 200k miles with wife and 4 kids trying to and couldn't tear it up.....sold it when one of the kids totaled it. Still mechanically sound, didn't burn oil, smooth running, shifted easily. Never had either in the shop for anything.
