Usually, you can tell if they are right by feel. Put the cap on the rod, and feel if there is a raised edge anywhere. When they are mixed up, they will have a raised edge somewhere to tip you off. When rods are originally machined, they are torqued, mounted in a fixture, and bored and honed to size. Rarely will two cap and rod assemblies be exactly the same. So, if you mismatch them, you should feel that mismatch. As a final check, plastigage them. If they are mismatched, clearance will simply be wrong - either too tight or too loose. If the clearance is right, they are most likely correctly matched.
A bit late for this.....but.......let this be a lesson to MARK things BEFORE you take them apart. Things that need to be matched or to go in a specific place NEED to be marked before disassembly.
