We receive lots of freight via UPS, Fedex, and a variety of other carriers. A large percentage of our incoming is damaged to the point of being crazy. Forklift punctures, tire tracks on top of packages, crushed areas where it's not feasibly possible, you name it. We keep a camera at the receiving dock and take pictures of any damage as it is received. If the driver will agree, he is often included in the picture.
Also, we are known to refuse shipments as well. The problem there is that we don't order things we don't need. So a beat up outer package may be OK inside.
The most damage comes from UPS. They always take care of it, after the fact. I just wish they could address the reasons before the fact. The pictures are the key.
