At this time, I am running the machine hot-wired - dangling wires and clips. I could continue in this way, but I'm thinking of buying new tires, and a new chain for it and I would like to clean it up - maybe even give it new paint; so, yes, I am getting a bit finicky. It is a useful machine and I want to keep it around for a while; so whatever I do for it, I want to understand how it all works. In the short run, I am making it hard for myself, but in the long run, it will be a lot easier when I have to go back to do maintenance. I'm not doubting the suggestion that putting resistance in the alternator's field wire will work; it's just that I don't understand why that works! I do viscerally understand why a diode will work with this circuit; so I'll go with what I do understand. I really do appreciate all the help that was offered by all the folks here - you-all got me unstuck!
