Mike they have pressure on them. You push them in and the female coupler will "hold" the hose/tip in until you work the lever to release the pressure so they will fully couple. The trick is to shut the tractor off and work the loader control lever to where there is little pressure on the couplers before you unhook them. To get them hooked up now that they have pressure on them just loosen the fitting at the coupler/tip until the pressure is low enough you can push them together. Also lube the female coupler up. If you do not take the loader off much them the female coupler will get hard to work and not couple well. That could also be your issue right now too.
As for "new" style couple. Yours is a throw back to the couplers used 30 years ago and that is why they are not used on the premium tractors JD builds. Your JD 5105 has it place and is not a bad tractor but there are things on it that are cheaper to be able to sell it at a certain price point. The loader couplers are one example of this. The premium couplers cost around $300 more than what you currently have. So you add up all the little deductions and you have a tractor that sold new for 20% less than the premium model. Now the up side. Your JD 5105 is a pretty simple tractor. So it is pretty dependable. not many electronics to go wrong on it.
As for your injector. Do you use fuel conditioner??? If your JD 5105 only has 600 hours it is not ran much. That model has not been available for over ten years now so it is not ran much. The newer diesel fuel does not have the lubrication properties that the older fuel did. You really should run a conditioner in it. I Use JD conditioner just because it is convenient for me and is price about the same as the other brands. Lucas, Power service, Howells and others will do the same thing. Some guys even say to just use AFT in your fuel. I stay away from that on a tractor that set much and just use the conditioner. For the amount your using the tractor it you would not use $25 of conditioner a year.

Today's Featured Article - A Question for Dads This recent topic from the Tractor Talk discussion board is being highlighted because it is an awesome display of the caliber of individuals that have made this site their own. The young person asking questions received positive feedback and advice from total strangers who "told it like it is" with the care many reserve for their own kids. The advice is timeless... so although it isn't necessarily antique tractor related, it will be prominently displayed in our archives to honor those who have the courage to ask and those who have the courage to respond in an honest, positive manner.
