My first step when I get something funky is to scan with my antivirus program and then with a program I bought that I bought for Malware.
Now we are getting outside the realm of what I know about - but I did some googling and for "a fix" of the problem you are referring, it is mentioning a "regedit" (registry edit), and messing with the registry would make me really nervous.
A. SO... what I would feel most-comfortable doing on my own computer - is to just remove Google Chrome as my browser... and then go install a fresh version of Chrome. NOTE THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR a WINDOWS 7 computer: 1. Click Microsoft Start button (bottom/left of screen) 2. Select "Computer" from the list 3. click on menu-bar button near top/left that says "Uninstall or change a program"... and it will quickly generate a list of everything on your computer. 4. Click on Chrome in that list to highlight it, then... 5. Click on "Uninstall" (located just above the list of programs) 6. Go to https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/ to download a new Chrome browser... there will be a link that says "go to download"
B. IF you do want to try the regedit (but like I said, that makes me nervous - I'd rather uninstall, then reinstall Chrome than mess around with the registry).

This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule.
