I had an '88 Ford extended cab, top of the line I bought new. In 90-92 timeframe, I was at work and heard the same thing. So I went to the local Ford dealer and asked what gives. He had a roll duct tape handy and said something like, well let's see. He put it on 2 or 3 places on my blue and silver truck and got paint off every place.
He said the paint job was free but it would be done on a time available basis. He said a free rental car goes with the deal. And do you have any mechanical problems with the truck? I said that I had a sending unit bad on the rear tank and something was wrong with the smog equipment....forget what. There was one other thing wrong but forget now.
They fixed the truck within a couple of days and called me when the paint shop was available. Took them about 2 weeks but got a dazzling job. None of it cost me a penny.
Oh, this was the truck that caused me to quit smoking. When I bought it I had cloth all over the interior and had captain's chairs done up in velour or something nice. I said that no way would I stink this sucker up and quit cold turkey after smoking since I was 14.
