My current JD 375 rolls a 5' long by 4' diameter roll and has no separate tensioner. The gate lifting cylinders are part of the rolling system besides lifting the gate. I learned all that thanks to TX. Jim. While I was working through the learning process on this baler I installed a 5k oil filled gauge in the feed to those cylinders. When the bale marker arrives at the red mark (time to stop and tie) the gauge is sitting right at 2500#. I get a nice tight bale with a tight center such that sometimes I have to use my FEL spike as I need to put downward pressure on the spike to get it to penetrate.....otherwise it just pushes the bale over.
