Mark, this subject brings up an interesting conversation and it leaves a lot of questions in my mind. If all expenses including labor, processing, refrigeration, transportation, handling, water usage, electricity use, diesel, gasoline, trucks, trains, ships, etc are considered would the present day meat based food infrastructure we enjoy be considered more efficient, or would a plant based (vegetable) food infrastructure be more efficient. Which one would be easier on the housewife's budget? I don't know the answer.
A very large percentage of this world's prime land can grow food crops for only a few months out of the year. I have no solid facts, but I suspect old established vegetarian religious cults/groups that have been with us for hundreds of years live in warm areas of the world that support plant growth year round. Our own native Americans from most of North America could not survive on vegetables and berries alone because of climate. Oh man, I'm rambling too much! LOL
