As for this current discussion. The judge might not have been entirely legal in his decision but all the two had to do was play along and the fellow can/could have been scott free pretty easily. If they had not wanted publicity them few would have to have known they got married if they did not consummate the marriage.
As for living together being the norm today or if not the norm common, That does not make it the better way. The numbers show that people who live together before marriage have a higher rate of divorce.
So someone wanted some fame. I do not know if it was the girl or boy but someone did or we would have never heard of this. I am just saying that even with the judge giving a weird condition of the fellow's parole it really is not much of a hardship unless the couple make it so. It is as simple as civil ceremony and an annulment. They can keep right on dating/living just like they have with little difficulty.
