I've used Linux for years. You get the latest and greatest for free. Ubuntu is very user friendly although they do promote commercial software. Install Ubuntu (or any of about 20 others) with the KDE desktop and you look at it and think "This looks like WIN 7/8/10." MS has been 'stealing' from open source for years.
There's also BSD - been around since forever and any BSD or Linux user can tell you that Mac OSX is FreeBSD with their own icons.
I'm typing this on Linux (Debian 8 ) right now. There are a few apps and drivers that will not run on Linux but there are also a lot of good programs that will - Firefox for one. There is a free 'replacement' for MS Office that will open and edit most Word docs seamlessly. Or you can try a 'live CD/DVD' - it boots and runs the system so you can see what you think without installing anything.
If you have some space on your hard drive you can install it without removing Windoze.
