phil_n, I know the reply was general, but I'll answer my specific
I used Debian on my last desktop (2002), and was impressed. I've tried several Linux live CDs on this laptop. Two prior versions of Ubuntu got caught in an endless loop on load. I've tried Knoppix, and while it did load on this box, it wasn't doing well. I've had Puppy running on this, which worked "out of the box" better than any other, but it still had some issues with the WiFi card. I have a SSD loaded with basic Puppy for this box, and when I get a bit more "geek time" to get the spare (equally old) laptop keyboard replaced to cover my internet needs, I'll get the bugs worked out of Puppy on this one, then convert the spare. Firefox v2.0.0.20 is getting too old for much of the web, though Open Office (v2.4) works even better than MS office. FWIW, winduhs 8 on SWMBO's computer does not play well with OO v3.x.
Part of the problem with Linux is hardware drivers - all drivers are written for winduhs, while Linux does a reasonably great job of covering the most common, but struggles with the odd stuff. Newer equipment seems to be better supported. probably because there seems to be better standardization now.
For anyone with qualms about supporting Micro$oft and the legal barrel they are increasingly putting those who use there software over, by all means, give Linux a try.

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Not a place one would associate with farms or farm machinery. I credit my parents for instilling a lot of good values, a respect for learning, a knowledge of various skills and a little knowledge of farming in me, amo
