One thing older job seekers seem to forget is the cost of replacing a worker for the employer. That's why older people find it harder to find employment. Several years ago Wal Mart was allegedly spending about 2500 just to hire one base level employee between HR's time, drug testing and training (that I find difficult to believe that they spend any money training employees). A new article quoted a major CEO who stated that anytime they had to replace an employee not only was there the cost for HR there was lost moral and production loss due to a co-worker being gone even for retirement. Plus the time to get the new employee up to speed.
As far as time for an interview. Lot of smaller construction firms and repair shops don't spend nearly as much time replacing employees because the owner wears many hats. Business owner, manager, foreman, HR and sometimes worker. So time from applying and interview can be very short. One of my wife's cousins builds homes and hires about 5-6 workers. When he is short handed if you approach him for a job you may get hired on the spot. If he makes that offer don't say no cause then he won't hire you at all.
