I recently put up lights in a new 30X48X12 pole barn. I put two rows of six four tube T8 fluorescent fixtures, for a total of 12 fixtures.
I'm more than satisfied with the result, and I like plenty of light when I work. I got the fixtures from Home Depot for around $40 each, and each fixture has an outlet on one end and a four foot electrical cord on the other. When I installed them, I just went down the line, hanging a fixture and plugging it into the previous one. I put an individual switch on each row, but I only needed one outlet at the start of each row.
A nephew of ours recently put LED lights in a similar sized shop. He claims he spent $14,000 on the lighting system. Even for LED, I thought that was awful high. Since I spent about $600 total including wiring, etc., even if my system uses a tad more electricity it will take a long time to make up the $13,400 difference.

But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
