Start with the most obvious. With the cap removed, try turning the engine. See if the rotor moves. If it does not, you have found the problem. If it moves, then check for shorting to ground. If the rotor shorts to the shaft it is mounted on, it will also cause you to lose spark. Look for carbon tracking on either the rotor or the cap. Also check the resistance of the wire coming from the mag to the cap. If this wire is broken internally, again, no spark and no start. Hope this is of some help.
