You are correct. It appears there never was a 2040 from Dubuque. The rest of the world had the same/similar 3 cylinder tractor as the 2040 but numbered as a 1030,840,940,1040.
The four cylinder 2040 was also known as the 3140.The 2040S was also 3340.
The 2040 in question would appear to be a 1979 production year.
