I put a seal like that in a 70 I was rebuilding for someone earlier this year. The problem is that the seal groove is about 1/4 inch square for a piece of cork. And, the rope seal that I was supplied would have fit a ford or mopar in the 70's.
My experience with it was that you cannot get the seal in without dropping the crank. I worked it in as best I could with the crank out. If you get it in there you will find at first a lot of drag. On a fresh motor the 6 volt starter could spin it without the plugs. Plugs in no go.
We pull started it and with a limited amount of time the motor will start cold because the seal is wearing in. It so far will not start hot and with limited time I don't know if it is seal drag or the starter. The motor is freeing with more time. And so far it doesn't leak.
Unless your seal is different it's going to be fun.
