I set everything for 150,000. I use a planter. Lots around here still drill. That gives you a lots taller plant but in my experience they seem to lodge too easy for my tastes. Back when the 435 drill was all I had it worked. Last year I did both drill and plant and found that planted beans worked better for me. Accuracy is king anymore due to overhead costs. I've got (what I feel is) a great planter. I've been toying with going down to 145 and see what happens. The yields vary so greatly with fields here that it will take a while before I could tell whether it pencils out. I think I've got more to gain with a combine that is set just right. I started thinking of the tune up list for it just today. The old gal will need to be on her game this year.
These are the best beans I have ever had and they are at 150. I guess I shouldn't mess with it too much. 5000 seeds per acre could really add up, though. So could a golf ball sized hole in the combine cross auger tube. Did that little experiment last year, unfortunately.
