Jim - I'm in the same boat with you. Have talked with at least one guy who used to work for Deere, and his OPINION is that one of the reasons they went to electronic controls was that they wanted to cut back on the work being done on Deeres by third parties - in other words, by shops that are NOT franchises & are not paying Deere any royalties or fees. I am NOT trying to "bad mouth" Deere here. Their approach MAY be sound business practice - and I even own & operate a Deere myself(5410) - but I DO think that this tactic is likely to leave a bad taste in the mouth of anyone who happens to come up "on the short end of the stick". My buddy - who I am TRYING to help - has very limited funds (don't we all) - and really cannot afford to pay Deere(or anyone else) $1200 for a hydraulic control unit (HCU ... and I thank you ALL for the diagrams & sketches). I had a 1984 Chrysler sedan that was largely controlled by computers & brains, and when something went wrong the problem-solving quickly became a "crap shoot" in which I guessed by replacing the parts that seemed most likely to have failed. I remember very well that the MAIN "brain" cost less than $300 ... and so it bothers me some that the HCU on this tractor costs roughly FOUR TIMES as much (I believe the parts are comparable) . . . . I knew when I posted my last question that the question MIGHT offend someone ... and I wanted more than anything else NOT to do that ... but since my knowledge & experience on this subject are SO LIMITED I felt the need to explore just a little further. I figure that the most inexperienced beginner on this forum MUST know more than I know about these matters, and so I am left with the task of asking questions & trying to get to the root of the problem. Again, I thank ALL who have been so kind as to reply & share their knowledge & experiences. Four or five guys here have REALLY "stepped up to the plate", and Dean(my buddy) & I appreciate that SO MUCH.
