As Billy NY stated, a subsoiler can be used to great advantage in the right places, but it requires power to pull it, even though it only cuts a small groove, it cuts deep. When I was in high school, back in the fifties, our county ag. extension service coordinated a demonstration on a local farm. Several local farm equipment dealers were happy to donate the use of tractors and equipment. The particular field I remember was about ten acres, and was cross subsoiled. The tractor would make a pass, turn around and run one rear wheel on the cut just made while making this pass, which placed each cut about 18 to 24 inches apart. After completing the operation in one direction, they did the same at a 90 degree angle. This broke the subsoil to a minimum of 18 inches. The field was then limed, fertilized and sown in alfalfa. The results were, to say the least, impressive!
