I recall when I was a kid, we cut the corn with a one row corn binder, which ejected the corn in bundles. We then followed behind the corn binder and put the bundles into shocks. Then hauled the bundles in on hayracks to a chopper that chopped the bundles into silage and blew it into the silo.
I'm not sure I'd call all of that work the good old days.
When my wife's brothers were kids, come silo filling time their father would go to the local auction barn and buy an old crow bait horse for $20. He'd put the horse in the silo and start blowing silage in. Of course the horse would stomp around on the silage to stay on top of it, packing it in the process. When the silo was full with the horse on top, the old man would take his .30-.30, shoot the horse off the top of the silo, make tankage out of him, and feed him to the hogs.
One year, a gal from the Humane Society got wind of it. She came out and threw a two hour tantrum in the yard. Next year it was business as usual.
