I just started raising a few layers. I brought 12 bar rock pullets last April. They just started laying, I'm getting 10-11 eggs a day out of them. Its just my wife and I so been giving eggs away left and right. I have sold a few for 2 bucks a doz.
I have raised meat birds, 20 years ago and we kept a 100 layers on the farm growing up. So this is my first dealings with chickens in a long time. I figured I go out and feed some steers daily so a few chickens wouldn't be a big deal to care for. Been working out good so far. I grind and mix my own feed too so a small batch of chicken feed now and then not a big deal.
I enjoy eating a meal knowing everything on the table came from my small farm and was raised by us. I didn't start the chicken thing because of the problems they had last spring. It was just a coincidence I guess. Plus the fact I have more time to do it since I retired from my real job.

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
