The Vanguard is a pretty decent engine. This engine was designed in conjunction with Dihatsui of Japan and I think the early ones were built by Dihatsui. They will not have the torque you need for a baler probably unless it can be geared to run full throttle all the time. It's power band is pretty narrow between 3,200 and 3,750 rpms. It will not last as long as the old cast iron Wisconsin you have now, but it will give good service while it lasts. They are easily overheated and seize if you do not keep the cooing fins and shrouds clean and free from trash buildup. We ran a bunch of them at the golf course where I worked for 8 1/2 years. They are not nearly as tolerant of abuse and lack of service as the old Kohler and Wisconsin engines are, but for what they were intended for they do well. You have to faithfully change oil and filter at the 50 hr.interval if you want it to last. The valves have to be adjusted regularly at about every 100 hrs. also. The push rods will jump out of the rocker arm and bend if it gets much looser than the recommend .004 thousandths clearence. They are not very tolerant of abuse and neglect.

But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga
